2011 Finals: A Tale of two veteran teams trying to win one
It was the same exact storyline five years ago. The Dallas Mavericks were facing the Miami Heat. In 2006, it was different circumstances. The Heat was rolling out a young star in Dwyane Wade, a 24-year old guard who the Heat had taken with the fifth overall pick of the 2003 draft out of Marquette. They also had veterans Jason Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Antoine Walker, and Gary Payton looking for a ring, with center Shaquille O'Neal looking for ring #4. Meanwhile, the Mavs had Dirk Nowitzki, one of the Elite NBA players, but not much else around him. The Heat won that series in 6 games.
Five years later, they meet again.
The Heat have gone through a rebuilding process, and over the last five years have had three first round exits in three playoff appearances, and won just 15 games in 2008. The development of this year's roster happened last summer when the team resigned Dwyane Wade and signed free agents Chris Bosh and LeBron James. The Mavs have last four seasons have been very much highlighted by playoff disappointments, none bigger than in 2007, when they were bounced in the first round by eighth seeded Golden State after going 67-15 in the regular season. Both teams are very different from 5 years ago, but when the two current opponents are compared, they are both very similar- they are comprised of veterans who have made sacrifices for the opportunity of getting a ring.
There are just four players from the 2006 series; Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Dwyane Wade, and Udonis Haslem. Nowitzki, along with James are just two of seven players in NBA history who have won an MVP but not won a championship. Nowitzki has been huge for the Mavs in the playoffs, averaging 28.4 points per game, and averaged 32.2 in the Western Conference Finals against OKC. Terry has been big off the bench for Dallas, averaging 17 points per game while averaging 30 minutes per game. Haslem has been big for the Heat since coming back from an injury he suffered in November. He joins Wade as two of three Heat players with a ring.
As for the other guys, there are countless veterans who are hungry for a championship. Starting with the Mavs, there are several "oh so close guys". Jason Kidd was the NBA's best point guard in 2002 and 2003 when he led the New Jersey Nets to the finals, but losing both years, getting swept by the Shaq and Kobe Lakers in 2002 and losing to the Spurs in 6 in 2003. He came to Dallas in 2008 looking for a championship, and after 8 years, is back in the finals. Then theres Shawn Marion and Peja Stojakovic. Neither have been to the finals, but finally got there after combining for 18 postseasons without being able to get out of the Western Conference bracket. Marion has spent most of his years in Phoenix, playing alongside Steve Nash and Amare Stoudamire, being part of a tandem that was known for great regular seasons but big playoff disappointments. Meanwhile Stojakovic made up a 1-2 punch with Chris Webber in Sacramento, then went to New Orleans and was part of a tandem that featured Chris Paul and current teammate Tyson Chandler. This is a guy who has never been able to get through the Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, but was finally able to this year with the second round sweep.
The Heat are no different. The two guys in the big three who weren't in Miami this time last year, took their talents to South Beach for one reason- rings. LeBron James had gotten to the finals in 2007, but was swept by the San Antonio Spurs. He was stuck in Cleveland, being the lone star, with not much support around him. And that didn't get anymore exploited than in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Chris Bosh never got out of the first round in his seven seasons with the Toronto Raptors. They also have Mike Bibby, who has spent his years with Sacramento and Atlanta, never reaching the finals despite several trips to the postseason. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was LeBron's teammate in Cleveland, and is in the same boat as him. Mike Miller is a veteran who has been a solid player for years in the league, and has taken a limited role to win one, and Eddie House is looking for his second ring after winning it all in 2008 with the Celtics.
Both these teams share a common bond and a common goal. One group of guys will be able to reach the goal that they had when they first put on an NBA jersey, holding the Larry O'Brien Trophy as a champion, while the other group must wait another year, or maybe longer.

Key Injuries: none
Coach: Erik Spoelstra, 148-98 in regular season, 16-11 in playoffs..After finishing 3rd in the Southeast division and going a combined 4-8 in two first round exits in his first two seasons on the Miami Heat bench, Spoelstra won 58 games and delivered the Heat their first division title since 2007 after the Heat picked up hot free agents Chris Bosh and LeBron James in the offseason. After a successful regular season, he coached the Heat to their second Eastern Conference Championship in franchise history winning 12 of 15 games, knocking off NBA MVP Derrick Rose and the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in their conference finals. With a series win over Dallas, the Heat will get their first championship under Spoelstra and first since 2006.
Team Overview- The star-studded Miami Heat roster that featured Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade, the Heat showed signs of inconsistency during the regular season. They've turned it on in the postseason, however, as they finished off the up-and-coming Philadelphia 76ers, defending Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics, and top-seeded Chicago Bulls in 5 games each, and limited NBA MVP Derrick Rose to 35% shooting in the final two games of the conference finals. They are a little shaky in the backcourt but can get by with Wade, but down low are as deep as anyone, with James, Bosh, Ilgauskas, Anthony, and Haslem, who has been huge since coming back from an achilles injury suffered in November. They also have shooters in James Jones and Mike Miller off the bench, who have stolen games in the postseason with their 3-point shooting ability. Overall this Miami team has proven to be a offensive and defensive juggernaut that has found ways to overcome their weaknesses that limited them in the regular season and are firing at all cylinders at the right time of the year, which makes them very scary.
X-Factor- The Front Court..The Heat have been money down low this postseason, averaging about 32 defensive boards and 7 blocks as a unit in the postseason. They showed this in the Conference Finals by neutralizing Derrick Rose in the paint, and not allowing him to drive the lane for a layup and try to draw fouls, his biggest strength that won him the MVP this season. This is a team very deep at the forward position, and has gotten deeper with the return of Udonis Haslem.
Dallas Mavericks
2010-2011- 57-25, 2nd place Southwest Division
Playoffs- Defeated Portland 4-2, LA Lakers 4-0, Oklahoma City 4-1
Starting 5 (Regular/Playoffs)
PG- Jason Kidd (7.9 PPG/8.2 APG/4.4 RPG; 9.9/7.7/4.5)
SG- Deshawn Stevenson (5.3 PPG/1.1 APG/1.5 RPG; 3.5/0.7/0.7)
SF- Shawn Marion (12.5 PPG/1.4 APG/6.9 RPG; 11.2/2.1/6.3)
PF- Dirk Nowitzki (23.0 PPG/2.6 APG/7.0 RPG; 28.4/2.7/7.5)
C- Tyson Chandler (10.1 PPG/0.4 APG/9.4 RPG; 7.3/0.3/9.3)
Bench
Peja Stojackovic (20:12/8.6 PPG/0.9 APG/2.6 RPG; 21:36/8.8/0.5/1.9)
Jason Terry (31:18/15.8 PPG/4.1 APG/1.9 RPG; 32:36/17.3/3.2/1.9)
Brendan Haywood (18:30/4.4 PPG/0.3 APG/5.2 RPG; 16:36/3.4/0.3/4.4)
JJ Barea (20:36/9.5 PPG/3.9 APG/2.0 RPG; 17:30/8.9/3.5/1.7)
Key Injuries- Caron Butler (knee)
Coach- Rick Carlisle, 3rd year with team, 162-82 in regular season, 19-12 in playoffs..Has taken the Mavericks to playoffs in all three years, but the first time he has taken a team to the NBA finals. He has done an outstanding job with Dallas, with the team improving in wins every season, with this year including a 57-win regular season, and has gone 8-2 in the playoffs. In the playoffs, they have won 10 of their last 11 games since losing game 4 of the conference quarterfinals to Portland, sweeping the defending NBA Champions LA Lakers and the up-and-coming Oklahoma City Thunder, knocking them off in 5 games.
Team Overview- Much better up front, with the starting veteran center in Tyson Chandler, who has averaged 7 points and 9 boards in the playoffs, and Shawn Marion, who has averaged 6 boards. They have the Haywood and Stojakovic coming off the bench, who has hit 29 3-pointers in the finals. They also have Dirk, who has been one of the best players in the playoffs, averaging 28.4 points per game. In the backcourt, they have the veteran Jason Kidd and JJ Barea at the point, and SG Jason Terry coming off the bench, averaging 17.3 PPG in the playoffs. The problem with the Mavericks, much the Bulls, is they lack a secondary scorer behind Dirk, which could prove costly against a team that features LeBron and Wade.
X-Factor- The outside game..The Mavericks had a great perimeter game this postseason, making nearly two out of every five shots from downtown. With two teams that have very stingy paint defenses, the 2011 finals will most likely be decided on the outside.
Team Comparisons
Experience- Both veteran teams that have been assembled to win a championship, recruiting guys who are willing to make the sacrifice for a ring. Dallas features Terry and Nowitzki who were on the 2006 team, and Kidd who went to finals twice with New Jersey. They also have veterans Shawn Marion and Peja Stojakovic, who came close multiple times with Phoenix and Sacramento, respectively. As for Miami, they have the only three players in the series with rings, Wade and Haslem, who were on the 2006 Miami team that won it all, and Eddie House, a big part of the 2008 Boston Celtics team. They also have LeBron, who went to the finals in 2007 with the Cavaliers along with Ilgauskas, and Mike Bibby who has good playoff experience from his years with the Kings and the Hawks. Advantage: Miami
Back Court: The Mavs have Jason Kidd, who has been an elite NBA point guard for about 15 years now and continues to be. They then have the young and explosive JJ Barea as the second unit PG and Jason Terry at the off-guard as the team's second leading scorer behind Dirk. The Heat have Dwyane Wade, one the NBA's best players and the leader of this Heat unit, but not much else outside that. Advantage: Dallas
Front Court: Both teams are very deep at the forward and center position, and are big reasons why they are so good defensively. They Heat have their scorer at the forward position in LeBron, while the Mavs have Dirk Advantage: Even
Offense: The Heat have three guys who can go for 30 on any given night in Bosh, James, and Wade. Not a whole lot besides that but have gotten clutch performances out of guys like Miller and Jones in the playoffs. The Mavs have Dirk as their only scoring threat, and don't have the secondary option like Miami has got. Advantage: Miami
Defense: Both great defenses, but the Dallas defense will be more exposed as a result of the threats that Miami brings to the table. The Heat have a much easier job, and I assume will do to Dirk what they did to D-Rose during the last series. Advantage: Miami
Series Outlook: This should be a good defensive series with low scoring games in the 80s and 90s. The games will come down to the wire for the most part, which will help the Heat big time as they have LeBron and Wade, and will force guys other that Dirk to beat them. The Mavs will need to use their good perimeter offense in order to win the close games, which have gone to the Heat nearly every time this postseason. Heat in 6.

Coach- Rick Carlisle, 3rd year with team, 162-82 in regular season, 15-11 in playoffs..Has taken the Mavericks to playoffs in all three years, but the first time he has taken the team to the conference finals. It is the first appearance in the NBA's final 4 since 2004 when he led the Pacers to the conference finals, the year after he took the Detroit Pistons to the conference finals. He has done an outstanding job with Dallas, with the team improving in wins every season, with this year including a 57-win regular season, and has gone 8-2 in the playoffs.
Team Overview- Much better up front, with the starting veteran center in Tyson Chandler, who has averaged 7 points and 9 boards in the playoffs, and Shawn Marion, who has averaged 6 boards. They have the Haywood and Stojakovic coming off the bench. They also have Dirk, who has been one of the best players in the playoffs, averaging 26.5 points per game. In the backcourt, they have the veteran Jason Kidd and JJ Barea at the point, and SG Jason Terry coming off the bench, averaging 18.3 PPG in the playoffs.

James Harden (26:42/12.2 PPG/2.1 APG/3.1 RPG; 31:18/12.4/3.7/5.1)
Key Injuries- none
Coach- Scott Brooks, 3rd year with team, 127-106 regular season, 10-8 in playoffs..Brooks has grown with this unit that features Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, Sefolosha, and Ibaka. After a tough first year, he's led the Thunder to two 50-win seasons, and has been very good in the playoffs, taking the eventual NBA champion Lakers to game 6 last year, then this year beating Denver in 5 and winning an intense 7 game series with Memphis.
Team Overview- A young and upcoming team, they have one of the game's best point guards in Russell Westbrook, and the 2-time defending scoring champion in Kevin Durant. They are an all-around very good team, with one of the game's best defenders in Sefolosha, a jack-of-all-trades point guard in Russell Westbrook, who is coming off a triple-double in game 7 against Memphis, Durant is one of the game's best scorers if not the best scorer in the game. Ibaka and Harden are up-and-coming players, Perkins is a lunch-pail type of player, who's physical paint game made him an integral part of the great Celtics teams of the past few years, and a second unit that is very good.
Team Comparisons
Experience- The Dallas Mavericks last went to the finals in 2006, losing to the Miami Heat. They currently have just two players from that team (Nowitzki, Terry). That number must be taken for a grain of salt, however, as this team boasts a number of veteran players, 10 of which have been in the league 8 or more years. One of those players, Jason Kidd, led two New Jersey Nets teams to the NBA finals earlier in the last decade. Meanwhile, the Thunder do have experience, with the most of the players being on the team in the last two seasons, which featured a deep playoff series with eventual Finals Champion LA Lakers last season, then this year with a 7 game playoff series with Memphis, while Mohammad won a ring in 2005 with San Antonio. Midseason acquisition Kendrick Perkins has played in 2 of the last 3 NBA finals with Boston. Advantage: Dallas
Front Court- The Thunder used the trade deadline to upgrade at the center position, picking up Nazr Mohammad and Kendrick Perkins. They also have who I feel is one of the most up-and-coming power forwards in Serge Ibaka. The Mavs have Tyson Chandler, a defensive player of the year candidate, at center, being backed up by Brendan Haywood. The Dallas front court made the Lakers duo of Gasol and Bynum, winner of the last two NBA Finals, look like rookies. Advantage: Dallas
Backcourt: Russell Westbrook is turning into a Chris Paul type of point guard, a guy who can score, work the offense, and play great defense, averaging 24 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds per game in the playoffs thus far. The Thunder then have a unique shooting guard combo of Sefolosha, a great defender, and James Harden, a great shooter. The Mavericks have a good point combo of Kidd, who has played in the finals twice, and JJ Barea, who had a very good second round versus LA. They then have Jason Terry coming off the bench, the second-leading scorer on the team behind Dirk. Advantage: Oklahoma City
Offense- The Mavs have Dirk; the Thunder have Durant. The Thunder can also get good offensive production from Westbrook (24 PPG in playoffs), while Ibaka and Harden are capable of putting up about 15-20 points any given night as well. Meanwhile the Mavs really only can get decent points from Terry.
Defense- Dallas has a good defense (96 points allowed per game in regular season), but is an old defense with guys in their 30s, on a long layoff after sweeping LA. The Thunder has improved as the season went on, especially following the big deadline deals. Advantage: Even
Series Prediction: Oklahoma City in 6

Edler-Salo
Key Injuries- Mikael Samuelsson (lower body)
Starting Goalie- Roberto Luongo (38-15-7/2.11/.928; 8-5/2.25/.917)
Top Scorers- Ryan Kesler (41-32--73, +24; 5-10--15, +6), Daniel Sedin (41-63--104, +30; 6-4--10, -8), Henrik Sedin (19-75--94, +26; 1-8--9, -8), Christian Ehrhoff (14-36--50, +19; 2-7--9, -7), Alexandre Burrows (26-22--48, +26, 4-4--8, -1)
Coach- Alain Vigneault, 5th year with team, 236-133-41 in regular season, 25-22 in playoffs..First time in Vigneault's career that he has led a team to the conference finals in five trips to the playoffs, four that have been in Vancouver (other in Montreal). Has been very good in the regular season, leading the Canucks to four 100-point seasons, with this season resulting in a Presidents Trophy, but has been not as good in the playoffs, winning just 25 of 47 playoff games, and was bounced from the second round in all three playoff appearances with Vancouver preceeding this year.
Team Overview- A very front-loaded team that specializes in scoring goals, a high-octane offense that has prolific playmakers in Kesler, Burrows, and the Sedin twins. On the blue line, they have one of the games best offensive defenseman in Christian Ehrhoff, who has 28-66--94 and is a +55 since taking his talents to the West Coast of Canada in 2009 following 5 seasons in San Jose. Outside that, the four defensemen have averaged over 23 minutes of ice time per game, and should see more valuable minutes from Rome as he will be paired with Ehrhoff. It has been a trying playoff for Vancouver, as they went to a game 7 with Chicago after having a 3-0 lead with the defending champs, and also had a tough series with Nashville that went to a game 6 before being decided.

Key Injuries- none
Starting Goalie- Antti Niemi (35-18-6/2.38/.920; 7-5/3.01/.906)
Top Scorers- Ryane Clowe (24-38--62, +13; 4-9--13, +6), Logan Couture (32-24--56, +18; 6-6--12, +3), Joe Thornton (21-49--70, +4; 2-9--11, -2), Dan Boyle (9-41--50, +2; 2-9--11, -2), Dany Heatley (26-38--64, +8; 3-5--8, -2), Devin Setoguchi (22-19--41, -2; 6-2--8, -3), Joe Pavelski (20-46--66, +10; 5-2--7, +4) Patrick Marleau (37-36--73, -3; 3-3--6, +1)
Coach- Todd McLellan, 3rd year with team, 152-63-31 in regular season, 18-16 in playoffs..after a long stretch of playoff disappointments that culminated with a first round loss to Anaheim in 2009 following a 117-point season that resulted in a Presidents Trophy, McLellan has led the Sharks to their second consecutive Western Conference Championship appearance.
Team Overview- Another team that knows how to score. They have been one of the NHL's best regular season teams over the years. After a long stretch of playoff disappointments, they have now gone to two consecutive Western Conference Championship series.
Team Comparisons
Center- Both teams are very strong at the center position, with the top two centers particularly very good. For Vancouver, they have 2010 Hart Trophy winner Henrik Sedin, who has struggled in the playoffs with a -8 rating, but Ryan Kesler has made up for that on the second line. The Sharks have another Hart Trophy winner in Thornton, who has been good in 2011 despite past playoff struggles. Logan Couture is a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year. Joe Pavelski is a much better third line option than LaPierre Advantage: San Jose
Forwards- Both go very deep at the forward position, with great first lines. The Sharks boast Setoguchi-Thornton-Marleau, and the Canucks have the Sedin twins and Alex Burrows. Both top lines have struggled during the 2011 playoffs, however. Outside Ryan Kelser on the second line, however, the Canucks don't offer much depth behind the first line. The Sharks on the other hand have solid second and third lines, with a second line that has led the way in the playoffs with Clowe-Couture-Heatley. Advantage: San Jose
Defensemen- Dan Boyle has averaged nearly 26:00 of ice time in the playoffs, but is only one of two San Jose blue liners who average over 20:00 per game. Meanwhile the Canucks have four men who average over 23 per game, but just two have a positive plus-minus rating. Both have questions. Advantage: Even
Goalies- Antti Niemi carried the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup finals last season and seems to be doing it again, playing very well between the pipes despite what his numbers suggest (3.01 GAA, .906 PCT). Luongo has been good as well, getting the winning decision in all 8 playoff wins for Vancouver. Advantage: Even
Series Prediction: Vancouver in 7
2010-2011 Record- 54-19-9-117, Presidents Trophy Winners
Playoffs- Defeated Chicago 4-3, Nashville 4-2

Marchand-Kelly-Recchi
Ryder-Peverley-Seguin
Paille-Campbell-Thornton
Chara-Seidenberg
Ference-Boychuk
McQuaid-Kaberle
Key injuries- Patrice Bergeron (concussion), Stephen Kampfer (knee)
Starting Goalie- Tim Thomas (35-11-9/2.01/.938; 8-3/2.03/.937)
Top Scorers- Brad Marchand (21-20--41, +25; 5-6--11, +9), Nathan Horton (26-27--53, +29; 5-5--10, +6), David Krejci (13-49--62, +23; 5-5--10, +5), Milan Lucic (30-32--62, +28, 2-3--5, +7), Zdeno Chara (14-30--44, +33; 2-2--4, +11)
Coach- Claude Julien, 4th year with team, 183-103-46 regular season; 25-17 playoffs..this is the fifth time Julien has led a team to the postseason in 8 seasons of coaching, it is the first time he has been to the conference finals. The team has played well under Juliens system this season, leading to a Northeast Division Championship, as well as a first round victory over Montreal after falling down 2-0, then sweeping Philadelphia in the second round.
Team Overview- Led by Tim Thomas in the first two rounds, has also gotten great contributions from their top two defensemen, Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg, as well as big contributions from their first line in Horton-Krejci-Lucic, which came alive in the second round exploding for 6-11--17 in the four games versus Philly. Much more weight has been put on Chris Kelly, will have to make up for the loss of Patrice Bergeron, who tallied 2-10--12 in 11 games while winning 64% of faceoffs taken.
Tampa Bay Lightning
2010-2011 Record- 46-25-11-103, 2nd place Southeast Division
Playoffs- Defeated Pittsburgh 4-3, Washington 4-0
Projected Game 1 Lines
Malone-Stamkos-St. Louis
Gagne-Lecavlier-Purcell
Bergenheim-Moore-Downie
Brewer-Ohlund
Hedman-Clark
Lundin-Jones
Key Injuries- Pavel Kubina (Upper Body), Dana Tyrell (Foot)
Starting Goalie- Dwayne Roloson (18-12-4/2.56/.912; 8-3/2.01/.941)
Top Scorers- Steven Stamkos (45-46--91, +3; 4-2--6, -2), Martin St. Louis (31-68--99, 0; 6-7--13, -5), Vincent Lecavalier (25-29--54, -5; 5-7--12, +4), Teddy Purcell (17-34--51, 1-10--11, +3), Steve Downie (10-22--32, +8; 2-10--12, +9), Sean Bergenheim (14-15--19, 0; 7-1--8, +4)
Coach- Guy Boucher, 1st year with team, 46-25-11 regular season, 8-3 playoffs..led the Lightning to a 23-point improvement to go along with 2nd 100-point season in franchise history in his rookie season, as well as first playoff appearance since 2007.
Team Overview- Has not lost since April 20, which was game 4 vs. Pittsburgh that put them down 3-1. Since then, the Bolts have ripped off 7 straight victories, including a 2nd round sweep of Washington, who was the first seed in the East for the second straight year. They have seen consistent offensive production from their top 3 forward lines, and has been carried by 41-year old goaltender Dwayne Roloson, who has a 2.01 GAA and .941 save percentage in 11 postseason games. The blue line has been weak, however, as 5 of the 6 Lightning defensemen have been on the ice for more opponents goals than Tampa Bay goals. Veteran blue liner Pavel Kubina is also out with an upper body injury.
Team Comparisons
Centers- David Krejci has been big for the Bruins in the playoffs, and had 9 points in the second round. They suffered a big blow when they lost Patrice Bergeron for at least the first game of the series with his third concusion in the last 3 1/2 years. The Lightning have a very good combination of Stamkos-Lecavalier-Moore, with Stamkos and Lecavalier being two of the best players in the game. Advantage: Lightning
Forwards- Top Line of Lucic-Krejci-Horton have 12-13--25 in the playoffs, and also have a gritty fourth line on Paille-Campbell-Thornton that opponents hate to face. The second line's production will depend on the play of Chris Kelly and how long Bergeron is out, but Marchand and Recchi have both been very good, with Marchand second on the team with 11 points, and Bergeron leading the team with 12. Tampa's first line has struggled, with the threesome of Malone-Stamkos-St. Louis combining for a -9 between the three, but the 2nd and third lines have made up for it, with the lines combining for 8-22--30, +9 and 11-17--28, +17, respectively. Advantage: Lightning
Defensemen- The Bruins top two defensemen, Chara and Seidenberg, have averaged over 28:00 of ice-time per game, with Boychuk averaging 23:26. Only Eric Brewer averages more ice-time than Boychuk, with 26:09 minutes logged per game. Just 4 of the 6 Lightning blue-liners have positive plus/minuses. Advantage: Bruins
Goaltending- Tim Thomas and Dwayne Roloson have both been sensational in net during the postseason. The two have identical records (8-3), and Roloson's save percentage is just a tad higher, and both GAA's hover right around 2. They're the best two goalies remaining in the playoffs. Advantage: Even
Series Prediction: Bruins in 6.
